“Housekeeping.” Lucy pounded on the door belonging to one of the two men she’d seen with Rick. When no one responded, she used her passkey and stepped inside the room. The fact he was a slob almost had her backing out. But since she’d come this far, she might as well complete what she’d started.

She’d thought masquerading as a housekeeper would make her task easier. After all, when you’re cleaning, things get picked up, put down, and moved. However, she’d miscalculated how dirty going through someone’s things would make her feel.

More than once, she’d asked herself what she was doing. And every time, the answer was the same. She was doing what she needed to do to help her sister. The fact it would also help herself was just a bonus. Or at least that was what was on repeat inside her head.

Unfortunately, it didn’t keep her from worrying about being caught. If that happened, not only would it keep her from getting the life she wanted with Roman. It would also make it more difficult for her sister. And she’d already been through enough.

Once Lucy was done searching the bathroom, she stepped back to take inventory of the bedroom. There was nothing out of the ordinary on the nightstand or dresser. But on the desk, she found a notepad. When she ran her fingers over the clean sheet of paper, she could feel indentations - much like Braille, but the opposite.

A memory from some television show had her coloring back and forth with a pencil. With every pass, she could make out a little more. Finally, she’d uncovered.

The door clicked open, and Lucy barely had the wherewithal to grab the dusting cloth. She tried to maintain a neutral expression. Except with the speed her heart was going, something told her she was screwed.

“What are you doing?” One of the men snapped.

“Dusting,” Lucy held up the cloth. “I’m almost done.”

She wiped the desk a few more times and then smoothed the bedspread on the way to her cart. With every movement she made, their comments in Russian kept getting more and more embarrassing. Her face flamed, and more than once, she had to bite her tongue to keep quiet instead of responding. What would they think if they knew she understood everything they were saying?

“I’m all done.” Lucy tossed the cleaning supplies back onto the cart and fought not to run.

She’d just reached the door when she realized her mistake: she’d left the colored paper on the notepad.

“Она шпионка.”

The words proclaiming her to be a spy sent a chill racing up her spine; the gig was up.

“Останови её!”

I’m sorry, Roman, she thought, as she was grabbed roughly from behind.

“Кто ты?”

Lucy fought the need to answer,
